An above-knee prosthesis consists of a custom-made socket combined with a knee unit, pylon, and foot. Sometimes a suspension sleeve or harness may also be necessary.
Each prosthesis is custom made for the wearer. materials and components will be selected based on the preferences and lifestyle of the patient. The socket, the custom molded human interface portion of the prosthesis, is designed based on the patient’s desired mode of suspension, optimum comfort, and appearance. The knee unit may be selected to satisfy the patient’s desire to perform certain activities, optimize comfort, and maximize stability. The same is true of the foot, which can be tailored to fit the patient’s needs for certain activities, as well as considering comfort, safety, and stability.
